Description & applications

Stainless steel fabricators are often confronted with the problem of producing a uniform and clean finish on fabrications, where hand buffing or polishing is neither required nor economically viable.

The DERUSTIT pickling paste 5050 produces a finish compatible to immersion pickling of stainless steel. There are many advantages resulting from the use of this paste eg: Welded areas and general surfaces are cleaned simultaneously resulting in the removal of contaminants that could affect the corrosion resistance of the metal. There is no limitation to the size of fabrication that can be treated. Reduced labour and material costs when compared with brush-on pickling methods. Cervices or bores that are inaccessible to brushes can be cleaned.

Application Instructions

Field of application

DERUSTIT pickling paste 5050 sprayable is intended for use on the Austenitic range of stainless steel and other high Nickel alloys.

Using the product

DERUSTIT pickling paste 5050 sprayable should be thoroughly stirred immediately prior to spraying. Shaking the plastic container will not ensure efficient mixing. Stirring with an electric drill equipment with a stainless steel paddle is recommended. Pour the DERUSTIT pickling paste 5050 sprayable into the spray applicator (ask DERUSTIT for different versions). Spray the paste uniformly over the whole surface to be treated with a maximum pressure of 6 bar.

Do not apply either product to warm metal or in direct sunlight !!

The time requirerd for DERSUTIT-pickling paste 5050 sprayable to be completely effective will depend upon the degree of oxidation, etc., requiring removal. Generally 30 minutes - 2 hours at 20°C is sufficient and as the pickling process proc eeds the paste will normally turn light green. However, the paste may be left longer if necessary without any risk of damage to metallurgically sound metal. An ideal method of operation is to spray the fabrication late in the afternoon and rins off next morning. It is advisable to rinse out the spray applicator and associated equipment shortly after applying the DERUSTIT pickling paste 5050 sprayable.

1 kg has a coverage of 3 - 4 m².

The spent paste and residues should then be removed by washing with high pressure (130 bar) cold water.

Post treatment

A clean stainless steel surface will generate a protective oxide layer in uncontaminated free air. The formation of this „passive layer“ can be accelerated by chemically passivating. It is recommended that internal surface of vessels or fabrications which have been pickled using the DERUSTIT pickling paste 5050 sprayable should be passivated using DERUSTIT passivating solution 2016.

Effluent treating

Effluent rinse water resulting from the use of DERUSTIT pickling paste 5050 sprayable should be neutralised prior to disposal in accordance with local authority regulations.

Safety precautions

DERUSTIT pickling paste 5050 sprayable contains Hydrofluoric and Nitric Acids and the precautions normally taken when with working with acidic solutions should be observed with this product. Protective clothing such as rubber gloves and goggles should be worn and suitable respiratory equipment must be used. More comprehensive safety details are available on the appropriate DERUSTIT safety data sheet.
